Social media is abuzz with speculations that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) is considering the formation of a “new academic authority” that will conduct exams like ICAI, ICSI & ICMAI exams. It all started with a Zee News report claiming that the Ministry of Corporate Affairs is planning to form a new academic committee named the “Indian Institute of Accounting (IIA)” that will govern all exams currently conducted by the ICAI, ICSI and ICMAI. The report further says that MCA has already formed an expert committee with over a dozen members to prepare a report regarding the same. Reportedly, the ministry wants all three professional bodies to be on the “same page”. No official confirmation has been made by either the MCA or any of these professional bodies regarding the same.
As per reports from the media channel Zee News, the MCA has apparently formed a 16-member committee to submit a report on the formation of a new academic authority to govern the ICAI, ICSI & ICMAI exams. Here are some key highlights from what the report discussed:
A committee of more than a dozen experts has already been formed to study and evaluate this proposal.
The main goal is to bring uniformity in exams and curriculum across the three institutes: ICAI, ICSI, and ICMAI.
This new authority would handle academic matters (exams, syllabus, etc.).
However, professional conduct and discipline would continue to remain with the respective institutes (ICAI, ICSI, ICMAI).
Netizens were quick to react to the news of MCA considering forming a new academic body to conduct ICAI, ICSI and ICMAI exams. Many users expressed their disappointment regarding taking away control from the respective professional bodies, while some also welcomed the proposals being made in the report.
A X user named CA Mehul Suthar said, “Really sad, ICAI first lost control to NFRA and now exam-related. Never expected this.” One user replied to CA Anupam Sharma’s post regarding the same, saying, “Sir, why do members keep sharing such unverified posts? There is still no official confirmation from MCA. These rumours are posted almost daily only for engagement farming. Please wait for an official notification instead of spreading unconfirmed news.” Another user on X expressed concern over this speculative move, saying, “If there is any outsider, it will ruin the standards and dignity set by institutes for sure. The efforts of the past 7 decades will just flush out. Say it, the methodology of exams, categories of applicants, etc., which will eventually affect the economy.”
On the other hand, several voices welcomed the move as long-overdue accountability. One user wrote, “much needed, bcoz icai’s top leadership certainly has no concerns with the well-being of students. All they care about is their stakeholders, but they fail to understand that the most important stakeholders they have are students.
Another called it “Absolutely important step !!! Long-awaited for many valid reasons, in the interest of the Nation.” A third simply posted, “Great decision ..”
Yet the overwhelming majority of prominent replies expressed alarm. CA Piyush Bhatt (@CAPiyushBh) warned, “This is a big downfall if academic authority is taken over from ICAI. It has been impeccable in conducting exams and updating academic excellence.”
While speculations are going around on social media, as of now, there has been no official confirmation from either the Ministry of Corporate Affairs or any of these professional bodies. Candidates and stakeholders must wait for the official confirmation on this from the concerned bodies. As of now it is advisable to not believe any speculations and wait for the official stand as it is a critical matter concerning the future of the exams and the professional bodies.
